Primary School Admissions (Reception to Year 6)

School places for children in Reception to Year 6 are arranged by Manchester City Council’s Admissions Team:-

Admissions Team, Manchester City Council, Town Hall, PO Box 532, Manchester, M60 2LA

Telephone: 0161 234 7166

Email: school.admissions@manchester.gov.uk

Parents of Nursery aged children will be contacted by Manchester City Council when your child is due to start Reception.

You must then apply to the Manchester City Council for a Reception place before the deadline which is usually in the January before they are due to commence Reception.

Parents must apply to Manchester City Council for a Reception place regardless of whether or not your child is in the school Nursery at Birchfields already.

Manchester City Council will then send offers of Reception places on the National Offer Day which is usually in mid April.

If your child is already of primary school age and needs a place in school now then please apply via Manchester City Council.

Please click here to check Manchester City Council website for further advice and copies of the relevant application forms or speak to a member of our office staff who will be able to advise you.

Nursery Admissions

Children are eligible to join Nursery in the September after they have turned 3 years of age. To register your child for a place in Nursery at Birchfields you will need to request an application form from the school office.

Offers for our September intake are made in April each year:

  • To apply for a place in September 2024, your child must be born between 1st September 2020 and 31st August 2021.
  • To apply for a place in September 2025, your child must be born between 1st September 2021 and 31st August 2022.

If the Nursery is oversubscribed then places which will be prioritised on the basis of the Manchester City Council admissions rules.

Once your child is allocated a nursery place, our EYFS team will arrange for you to visit the department with your child and they will also visit you and child at home in the summer term before your child is due to start in September.

Please note that a place in our Nursery is no guarantee of a place in our school in Reception and you must still apply for this separately to Manchester City Council as outlined above.

If you have any questions about admissions then please contact our office team on 0161 224 3892 or admin@birchfields.manchester.sch.uk and they will be happy to help.
