Meet Our Governors

Rebecca Jones
Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones - Chair of Governors

I have been a Parent Governor at Birchfields Primary School since 2010. I am now Chair of Governors and have held this role since September 2015.

I sit on the Resources Committee and I am Lead on the Attendance Committee. I also sit on the Special Educational Needs and Child Protection Committees.

I believe that every child deserves the best opportunities and education available and I have, and will always, strive endlessly for this for the pupils at Birchfields Primary School.

(Vice-Chair, LA Governor, Resources Committee, Premises, Pay Committee, HT Performance)

Dr Ivan Garcia - Chair of Teaching and Learning Committee

I have been a Parent Governor at Birchfields Primary School since March 2016. I work at the University of Salford as Head of the Department of English, Politics and Contemporary History. I care deeply about the transformative power of education in our society and the fundamental role that primary schools play in setting aspirational goals for our children. I currently sit on the school's Teaching and Learning committee.

Sarah Wakefield - Chair of Resources Committee

I have been a Community Governor for Birchfields since 2012 and I live just down the road in Levenshulme. In my day job I work for the Co-op Food Offices in Manchester as Food Sustainability Manager, this job can take me anywhere from chocolate factories to meetings in Parliament!

As a Birchfields governor I sit on the Resources sub-committee, where we discuss finances and staffing. I am also the governor for Pupil Premium and responsible for ensuring that those children who receive Pupil Premium are given the best start possible on their educational journey.

I love the energy and happy feel which Birchfields has and my hope for the school is that we can get an Outstanding Ofsted rating – something which would recognise all the hard work of our teachers and children!

Satnam Singh- Parent Governor

I have recently been appointed to the role of parent governor and a member of the teaching and learning committee. I currently have two children attending Birchfields Primary School.

I have a strong belief in giving children maximum opportunities to discover their full potential through education and extra curriculum alike.

My background is in banking, where I have worked for 13 years.

As a parent governor I will offer commitment, enthusiasm and determination to make a difference: striving for academic excellence and to be a link for communication between governors and parents.

I am looking forward to bringing fresh ideas forward and am able to see issues from a different perspective. I hope to build on the schools success and continue the work hard to  make it a school where children can ‘dream, believe and achieve.’

Katherine Gibson - Co-Opted Governor

I joined as a governor at Birchfields Primary in September 2016. I am Assistant Vice Principal at the new MEA Central Secondary School which opens in September 2017. I will be working on the Teaching and Learning sub-committee and hope to bring my experience as a classroom teacher and school leader to this role. I have been a History teacher for 13 years and am excited about learning more about Birchfields Primary School. As the new neighbours we have had a lovely, warm welcome to the community from the staff and students of Birchfields and I look forward to working with them.

           Rashid Hussain - Parent Governor

I recently became a parent governor but have been wanting this opportunity for quite some time. My wife is a staff member of the school and my daughter also attends the school, currently in reception. I have lived in Manchester for over 25 years and attended Birchfields Primary School during the 1980's. I am a qualified Project Manager and also hold a marketing degree. For the past few years I have worked on some of the largest business change and IT projects within the Co-operative Group and currently working within the General Insurance division. My interests include Badminton, table tennis and watching sports. I enjoy going out for food and spending time with family and friends. Birchfields Primary School and its reputation is very important to me as it has always been and still is a part my life and now l would like to put some thing back into the school by assisting on the Governing body. As a parent governor I am keen to transfer the knowledge and skills I have acquired over the years, in making the school a better educational facility for the young, a reputable institute for parents to send their children to and also add some assurance to parents that the school is operating and managed to a high standard.

Emily Coleman - Staff Governor

My role is that of Staff Governor and I am a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee.
Since I joined Birchfields as a teacher is 2003, I have seen our school community change and develop in many different ways. I endeavour to provide Governors with professional knowledge and understanding of our school's ethos as well as a unique perspective of Birchfields' culture and values. It is only through the dedication and involvement of the Governing Body that we will continue to provide the best possible opportunities to all of our learners, whether they be pupils or staff.
